Excitement filled the school today as the Boys U15 rugby team prepared for the Cleary Cup final in Clonmel. The team had trained hard all year and done very well to get to the final. Lead by their captain Joseph McEvoy (3rd year) the team were up against tough competition with the High School in Clonmel team having many experienced players from the Munster academy. Although going a try down in the first five minutes, the boys battled hard throughout the game showing their strong spirit of never giving up.

Although the final score doesn’t reflect the boys effort and work rate throughout the match, the boys did their coaches, their school, their supporters and themselves so very proud.

Thank you to the teachers and two support buses who travelled to support the team today. Well done to their coaches Ciaran Sheedy, Harry Byrnes, Felim Tuite, Jack Lynch, Marc Loughran and Hugh Denning. Thank you Jack R Lynch for the photographs.

St. Anne’s Community College Killaloe, St Caimins College Shannon and St. Joesph’s College Tulla participated in an inter schools chess tournament in Killaloe on Thursday 7th April. 4 teams from each school battled it out for the day with each team playing up to 6 games.

St. Caimin’s top team with Irish champions took well deserved 1st place medals on the day. Killaloe TY team also had success being the runners up in what was a tough competition.  They were delighted with their win as it was their first ever competition.

Excellent participation in the tournament was a credit to the school’s involved.

Thanks to Mrs. Corbett, the staff at Killaloe and all her helpers throughout the day.

Past pupil Shane O Leary will line out at number 10 for Connacht when they face his old club Grenoble on Saturday in the quarter-finals of the European Challenge Cup. Shane has been with Connacht since the Summer of 2014 after previously playing for Grenoble. Shane got his first start of the season in last weekends clash against Ulster when Connacht were narrowly beaten 18-10. Shane  has worked his way up through the ranks showing that hard work and dedication do pay off and has earned his starting place again this weekend.

Shane’s initial rugby was with Ballina Killaloe RFC, who then amalgamated with Scarriff RFC before his move to the Limerick club Young Munster.

The match will be live on BT Sport on Saturday with kick off at 8:05pm.

Parents Information Evening Senior Options 7th March 2016

The Build A Bank Team came in the top 8 out of 36 school bank teams in Munster and were one of the eight semi-finalists in the Munster region to compete for the National Finals of the Build A Bank Competition.

While unsuccessful in getting to the National Finals the bank team represented their school very well and drew the judges’ attention because of all the sponsors in the local area they got the support of and because of an innovative and imaginative approach to school banking.

Supported by Mr. O’ Brien and Noelle Hourigan the AIB student officer in the Killaloe Branch the Build A Bank Team were Harry Byrne, Eithne Walsh, Jack J. Lynch., Anna Conway, Anna Spaight, Hannah Mooney, Keelan Farnan, Ben Kiely.

Over 120 business studies students from St. Anne’s took part in the Clare County Finals of the Student Enterprise Awards with great success today. Students from 1st, 2nd and Transition Year have been working hard on their mini companies since September. The students had a wide variety of interesting companies selling many different products.

With 120 companies in total exhibiting at the event the students faced tough competition from other schools in Clare. In the Senior Category David Casey and Daniel Kelly (TY) had great success with their enterprise Fatal Fudge coming in 2nd. Their company produced some beautifully homemade fudge in a variety of flavours including oreo carnage and skittle fudge. Ben Kiely and Keith McNamara (Both TY) won the Best Innovation Award in the Senior Category for his product Mitóig Sabháilte/Safe Gloves. Eabha Hughes and Sinéad Kennedy (Both TY) won Best Display in the Senior Category for their company Hot Stoco. The girls showed off their impressive marketing skills attracting the attention of the judges at the finals. In the Intermediate Category there was success for Katie Pearl (2nd Year) winning 2nd prize for her company Gifts and Things.

Thank you to the teachers Ms. K Egan, Ms. M Ryan and Ms. S McNamara for preparing the students so well and encouraging them all the way through. A special mention to Ms. Egan who received a special teacher award. Thank you also to Mr. O’Brien for all the pictures.

Exhibition: Re-imagining 1916

Since moving to its new location at Clarisford in 1987 St. Anne’s Community College is going from strength to strength. A new wing was added in 2002 and a further block in 2012. The latest development due to be built in 2016/2017 includes 8 general classrooms, a 4^th Science Laboratory, a 2^nd Home Economics Room, a 2^nd Engineering Room, a 2^nd Computer Room, a Dining Area and a full size PE Hall. The school offers a broad range of programmes, subjects, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. We focus on the holistic development of our students in a caring and supportive environment. At the very heart of the school curriculum is the specialist teaching of languages, music and creative skills, which are showcased in this ambitious exhibition. Proclamation Day will take place in St. Anne’s on the 15^th of March. This will give all students an opportunity to display their work on a range of projects involving reenactments music, visual art, and drama.

As part of the nationwide Commemoration events, St. Anne’s has endeavored to promote a lifelong interest in history, through looking at the lives of ordinary citizens in 1916 and helping students put the information in the context of their lives today. The Reimagining 1916 project has given TY and 4^th year students the opportunity to be active participants in the Commemoration, and contribute to research, which currently exists from their unique perspective.  The Transition Year Programme in St. Anne’s offers many opportunities to the students to increase their awareness of their culture, history, personal well-being and academic development. The students have embraced this project and have maintained a strong sense of ownership throughout. Joe Duffy’s recent publication has a particular resonance for most students. Many were shocked and saddened upon learning that forty under-sixteens’ were shot in a single week. Among the work exhibited is a poignant painting of a pram created by TY student Aoife Boland which represents Sean Francis Foster who was shot through the head during a firefight between rebels and British soldiers at North King Street. The key roles of women in the Rising are explored well as the main leaders. Ciara Murphy was inspired by Margaret Skinnider’s story and the details of her service as a dispatch rider, sniper and raider. She will exhibit a beautiful collage and large drawing depicting Skinnider. She explains she was really struck by the image of her cycling through the street as the bullets ricocheted offthe wheels of her bike. Eabha Hughes will exhibit an intricate pen and ink triptych represents the struggle of the formation of a new state and identity through animal symbolism.

The lives of Pierce, Connolly, Clarke, Mac Dermott, Plunkett, Ceannt and MacDonagh are explored through a series of short drama pieces. A wide range of additional artwork including the Proclamation Dress will be on show during the exhibition in the Prologue Room. Music, short drama pieces and poetry composed specifically for the Commemoration will be performed at the launch of the exhibition in Captain’s Room at 2pm on the 10^th of March. ‘Reimagining 1916,’ will be launched by renowned local artist John Shinnors.  The Exhibition runs until the 18^th of March.
